Internet connectivity on demand
No single point of failure, BGP4 routed, gigabit Ethernet, STM4 (622Mb) to multiple tier1 ISP’s bandwidth connection. BGP automatically takes care of failing over from one ISP to another, and thus provides redundancy with its default settings. 

BGP is the only widely implemented EGP (Exterior Gateway Protocol) and the only routing protocol linking networks to one another on the Internet, providing a lot of control over the destiny of your Internet traffic.

BGP is a Path Vector Protocol, which is similar to a Distance Vector Protocol, but with a key difference. A Distance Vector Protocol chooses routes based on the hop count (or routers traversed) and link speeds; BGP, in contrast, chooses a route that traverses the least number of Autonomous Systems (AS). As a routing advertisement passes through an AS, it pretends (adjusts the path length advertised) the ASN of the AS of origin to the path of other ASes it has traversed. By default, the path with the fewest ASNs is stored in the routing table as the optimal path to a destination network. One AS can contain multiple routers, so it's possible the actual hop count is higher than the AS path indicates. 

Enhanced BGP's built-in flexibility
Example. The facility offers Internet connectivity through multiple tier 1 ISP’s, and in doing so we need to control the path traffic takes leaving the facility. When peering with multiple neighbours in an external AS, or in different external ASes, there will be multiple paths to the same destination network. By default, BGP determines the optimal path by picking the route that has traversed the fewest number of ASes. However, BGP does not take link speed or network load into consideration when computing paths, so the shortest path may not be the optimal one. 

To get around this by using BGP's Local-Pref attribute, which forces BGP to take a particular next-hop route in a scenario with multiple choices. By telling the router that all, or even some, of the routes advertised to one of our router interfaces should receive a higher Local-Pref weight than the same routes advertised to another interface. Because Local-Pref is always considered before the computed path-distance, the interface you designate with the highest Local-Pref will be chosen as the route. 

The result of this dynamic infrastructure is that the connection between your services and the “Internet Cloud” is the optimal connection.

Our network architecture is Fast Ethernet which provides each of our servers the potential of a 100Mbit/s connection to the Internet. All supported by Juniper routers and Extreme wire speed Gigabit switches, designed to an n+n configuration to give maximum throughput and total resilience. 

 



Physical and Logical Security
Our facility is  protected with 24-hour security manning, CCTV monitoring and tracking via swipe card access systems. To ensure logical network security the physical network is separated into a number of discrete segments each firewall protected to provide a secure controlled separation of LAN’s. In addition we provide a range of other security services including firewall management, iP filtering and trial site hacking.

 


Data Centre Technical overview
It is recognised that an integral part of the hosting service is the hosting environment. For equipment to offer optimal performance the hosting environment has to be maintained at the correct operating levels.

Fire Detection - VESDA
VESDA is a fire detection system that offers the earliest possible warning of a potential fire and is used within iXguardian iXc’s. 

VESDA’s high quality aspirating smoke detectors work by continually drawing air into the pipe network by a highly efficient aspirator located within the iXc air-conditioning risers. 

A sample of this air is then passed through a dual stage filter. From the filter, the air sample is passed through to a detection chamber where it is exposed to a stable controlled laser light source. When smoke is present, light is scattered within the detection chamber and is instantly identified by the highly sensitive receiver system. 

The VESDA detectors then communicate this information to the fire alarm control panel and building management system within the iXc NOC. An alarm automatically shuts down the iXc air-conditioning, thus preventing damage to equipment outside of the risk area.

Fire Suppression - INERGEN
INERGEN is the world's leading inert gaseous fire suppression agent. It is fast, effective, safe, and environmentally friendly and provides excellent fire protection for all critical areas within the facility. 
INERGEN is a mixture of nitrogen, argon and carbon dioxide gases and has been specially developed to provide fire protection for sensitive electrical and electronic instruments and equipment.

This mixture of gases extinguishes fire by reducing the oxygen level in a room to below 15%, the point at which most combustibles will no longer burn. Simultaneously the carbon dioxide in INERGEN stimulates the uptake of oxygen by the human body, so protecting anyone who might be trapped in the fire area from the effects of the lowered oxygen levels.

Power & Air Conditioning
One of the most revolutionary parts of the facility is the self-contained n+n resilient energy centre, which not only produces the facility electrical supply, but also the fuel for the facility air conditioning. The energy centre is scheduled to be commissioned in the 3 quarter of 2001 in the meantime the facility is powered by the local utility company with generator backup in the event of power failure.

Power failure is one of the most common reasons for web-site downtime with equipment  getting smaller the power requirements remain the same. This means that per rack more equipment can be housed and therefore more power must be available.

Power
The facility power supply is monitored 24x7x365 days a year. Network sensors monitor the throughput, and should a deviation occur alarms sound in the NOC, and in cases of a critical failure the system failovers automatically switch in within milliseconds ensuring no disruption to customer supply, again with alarms sounding in the NOC.

In worse case scenario where the facility energy centre becomes completely inoperable UPS backup takes over. The UPS is capable of supporting, at full load, for a maximum of 5 minutes, or until either the backup generators kick in, or worse case scenario the national grid input feeds.

Air Conditioning
As previously mentioned the energy centre not only supplies power to the facility, but also provides the fuel for the air conditioning. A natural by-product of all power sources is heat. This heat is used to create the chilled water supply for the facility air conditioning. 

The air conditioning system is monitored 24x7x365 days a year from the Network Operations Centre (NOC). The NOC monitors and controls air conditioning from the energy centre through to the hosting area.
